Should you switch KiwiSaver funds?

Pick your current fund and we'll show the three cheapest alternatives in the same risk band — with fees, past returns and what the difference could mean for your balance over time. Same risk band matters: comparing a growth fund with a conservative fund is apples and oranges.

Before you switch

Is it hard to switch KiwiSaver providers?+

No — it's one of the simplest financial moves in New Zealand. You sign up with the new provider and they handle the transfer, including telling Inland Revenue and your old provider. It usually takes a couple of weeks, and your money is out of the market for only a few days.

Should I switch just because another fund is cheaper?+

Not automatically. Fees matter a lot over decades, but also check the fund's risk level, its investment approach, and whether its past returns are consistent — remembering that past returns don't predict future ones. A lower fee on the wrong type of fund can cost you more than a higher fee on the right one.

Will switching cost me anything?+

KiwiSaver providers in New Zealand generally don't charge exit or entry fees for switching. The main cost to be aware of is being briefly out of the market while the transfer settles.

How often should I review my fund?+

Once a year is plenty for most people — for example when your annual statement arrives, or after a big life change like a pay rise, a first-home goal, or getting within 10 years of retirement.
